Nueva Valencia is a 3rd class municipality of the Province of Guimaras with a total land area of 13,258 hectares. Considered as the tourism capital and a major fishing ground of the Province, it has several white sand beaches, affordable cottage, panoramic corridors, vast and rich fishery resources.
The municipality is bounded on the North and East by the town of Sibunag, on the South and West by Panay Gulf and Guimaras Strait. It is located on the southern part of Guimaras island, with grid coordinates of 122o 5’ longitude and 10o 5’ latitude.
It has twenty-two (22) barangays in which 17 are coastal (including 2 island barangays) and 5 inland with a total population of 42,771 with 10,803 households. Distance from Provincial Capitol is 13 kilometers. Religion is predominantly Catholic, dialects are Hiligaynon and Kinaray – a. The climate of Nueva Valencia is practically the same with that of the whole island of Guimaras, that is dry during November to April and wet the rest of the year.
The local economy of Nueva Valencia is based on its natural and manpower resources. Since it is agricultural – based municipality, the employment level was primarily focused on the Agri – Fishery Industry at 67.80%, followed by trade and services, 24.96% as secondary sector and the third, the manufacturing, construction and facilities at 7.24%.2
Geographical Location
The Municipality of Nueva Valencia is one of the five- (5) municipalities that comprise the Island Province of Guimaras. It is located southeast of Panay Island, northwest of Negros Occidental. Iloilo Strait separates Guimaras from Panay with a distance of approximately six (6) nautical miles. The Municipality of Nueva Valencia is bounded on the north by the Municipality of Sibunag, on the South and East by Iloilo Strait and on the West by Guimaras Strait. It is within the geographical coordinates of 10o 31′ 40.63″ N latitude and 122o 32′ 18.62” E longitude.
